'Core Audio is Not Available' I've been recording tracks on my 2009 Macbook Pro since I got it, but with this most recent update, all the sudden I am not able to hear or play anything on Garageband. I have sound elsewhere (Itunes, Chrome, etc) and my input jack is working properly per my system sound preferences, but no luck with Garageband. May 06, 2019 I am 100% sure my input/output MIDI settings are correct and appropriate devices are selected (my main interface is a Scarlett Solo). I have been using Garage Band for years and I tried it with different audio interfaces like UCG102 or the internal ALC887 chipset. Always the same error: 'Coreaudio is not available.' Jan 29, 2009 Hey guys, I upgraded to iLife '09 today. I just launched Garageband, and i'm getting a greyed out interface. When i try to arm a track or hit 'record', i get 'core audio is not available'. If you create a song in GarageBand on one computer and then try to open it in GarageBand on another computer, you may get an alert message that says, 'Core Audio Plug-in EXS24. This can happen if you create the song in GarageBand 2 and then try to open it in GarageBand 1 on another computer, because GarageBand 2 includes new. CAF files mostly belong to GarageBand by Apple. CAF filename extension is associated with audio file containers saved in the Core Audio Format developed by Apple. As an audio container, a single CAF file may contain audio content saved in various formats without imposing standard file size restrictions applicable to those formats.

Core Audio is a low-level API for dealing with sound in Apple'smacOS and iOSoperating systems. It includes an implementation of the cross-platform OpenAL.^[1]

Apple's Core Audio documentation states that 'in creating this new architecture on Mac OS X, Apple's objective in the audio space has been twofold. The primary goal is to deliver a high-quality, superior audio experience for Macintosh users. The second objective reflects a shift in emphasis from developers having to establish their own audio and MIDI protocols in their applications to Apple moving ahead to assume responsibility for these services on the Macintosh platform.'^[2]

After installing macOS Mojave or later, you might see an alert that says audio input isn't accessible when trying to record. Or you might not hear sound, see waveforms, or see audio meters move when recording. To record audio, allow the app to access audio inputs:

Close the app you're using to record audio.
On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click Privacy.
Click Microphone.
Select the checkbox next to an app to allow it to access the built-in microphone on your Mac, an external USB mic, or the inputs on an external audio interface.
Open the app and try to record audio again.

If you're using an external microphone or an external audio interface to record audio and it's still not working, check with the manufacturer of your device for software updates and information on compatibility.
